Hawai`i singer/composer Bob Rogers of the group Coconut Joe presents a photo essay of his travels up and down the coasts of Hawaii on bicycle and foot. His current focus is his Windward Coast of Oahu Collection: Makapuu to Turtle Bay. Next Showing.

Getting off the highways to the back roads and trails, these photos share his sometimes unique views of islands scenery, locale and personality.

Born and raised on the Windward shores, Rogers shares his thoughts behind his photos. "I try to go out every weekend and find new views and update the individual collections usually with different perspectives, different framing, or new locales. So, the collections are a living and continually changing art form, almost like improvised jazz. "

"Some shots are abstract, some framed with natural components, some are unique perspectives, and others just help us get us from one locale to another. Nothing is staged other than me on my bike.”

“It’s really exciting to find a new dirt road or path that takes me to a place I’ve never been to before. We tend to hop in our cars and drive from one location to another and never really see what’s in between. I decided to take it a little slower. Explore a little of my island home.”

The collections can be seen in a live multi media presentation with the original music of Coconut Joe. Bob also composes all the music, many with lyrics about growing up and life in the islands.

“It seems natural to combine the music and the photos.” says Rogers. "They inspire each other."

Coconut Joe, known for their vocal harmonies, features guitarist Frank Kam, bassist, Peter Agustin, Barbara Ann Rogers on percussion with Bob on guitar and harmonica.

The group’s eclectic musical styles include pop, folk, rock and jazz with a touch of the islands. Together since 1996, the group has released two CDs and is currently working on their third.
