We, the future Backroaders of Canada, met at the Rimrock Hotel in Banff, all decked out in our biking gear with our guides for the week, J, Mitch and Zack introducing themselves and asking us to do the same.  J, the 6’4” Belgium briefed us on the week’s events and the method of the hiking and biking madness.  Mitch the knowledgeable Canadian resident also briefed us on the days ride.  Zack, another local expert, took the lead on caring for our technical equipment needs.

The beautiful sunny weather we had on the previous day abandoned us on day one, our first bike ride.  Overcast, a little damp, but we were going to ride.  Because that’s what Backroaders do.

We were given our daily trip sheet, verbal as well as printed out turn-by-turn instructions. To be honest, I was overwhelmed with info.  But some how it sunk in and I would learn through out the day that it wasn’t that hard.  Besides, I like the exploring challenge anyway, more like my style.

So, we headed out down the steep hill from the hotel, dodging cars and trucks, a typical road ride though slick from the early morning rain.  We road to a nearby park with massive water pouring over a brink into a river.  We followed a gorgeous road though a deserted golf course.  Remember, it was overcast and threatened to rain, though it didn’t.   I left the Nikon back at the hotel for fear of it getting wet.  My IPhone X would have to do today.  I did miss the SLR.  Not much shots on this day.
