Last Kicks On Route 66, California: This would be our last exposure to the Route, or what's left of it. Not much, just some barely standing buildings, all but abandon roads and the words to a song made famous by Nat King Cole. We were now in the Mojave Desert and the landscape became barer and barer. The highway, long and flat stretching out to the horizon. I was imagining Steinbeck's Tom Joad first seeing California as we too came out of the San Bernadino mountians and the seeing green crops of oranges, dates and berries, ripe for the picking.
